How WRS provides a helping hand
Much of the Sumatran orangutan's home in the rainforest has been destroyed due to agricultural expansion. With natural food hard to find, the orangutans often venture into farms in search for food, creating human-orangutan conflict.
The Human Orangutan Conflict Response Unit (HOCRU)* responds to conflict situations, translocate orangutans at risk and train local communities to humanely protect their crops from foraging orangutans.
WRS supports the work of HOCRU in mitigating human-orangutan conflict. Support also includes funding for the veterinary internship programme and veterinary equipment for field operations.
*The Human Orangutan Conflict Response Unit was set up in 2010 by the Orangutan Information Centre, Sumatra.
